We are in our unit on periodic trends and I have always struggled with coming up with labs that use chemicals and equipment during this part of the year. I've done the solubility lab for quite a few years, but this lab is by far my new favorite. Since I already start my trends unit with a demonstration of the reactivity of the alkali metals in water, this lab is a nice compliment. Not only does it help students to conduct explanations for reactivity down a group and across a period, but it also allows students to focus on the scientific process and how to analyze and interpret data. In this video, I'll share some scaffolding I developed to help my students take ownership of their lab investigation. I hope this video inspires you to try out some of these strategies yourself.
Thank you so much for watching!
